Why will the "A+++" washing machine I have just bought become an “E"?

The EU legislation for the Energy Label has changed for the following products: dishwashers, washing machines, washer dryers, refrigerators, including wine storage fridges, and freezers. The new Energy Label with the QR code will be applicable as from 1 March 2021 and can be ignored until that date.

The energy efficiency of the appliance you have just bought stays the same. It is only the rating, i.e. the letter on the energy label, that changes, not the product efficiency.

The legislation requires that each appliance is supplied with two labels – the current one and the new one.

Why does the box of my recently bought home appliance include two labels?

Why do I have two labels in the box of my recently bought home appliance, and they show different grades?

Yet, the fact that you see one label with A+++ and one with F does not mean that the appliance you bought is different from the one you saw in the shop or on the website where you bought it.

The efficiency of the appliance stays the same. It is only the rating, i.e. the letter on the energy label, that changes, not the product efficiency.

Why does the energy efficiency grade change that much?

The new EU Energy Label has been introduced to give room for differentiation for more technologically advanced home appliances. Depending on the level of efficiency they reach, they will be attributed a different grade on the energy label scale. The EU legislators decided to rescale the current label, leaving the upper classes empty to allow room for progress in future-developed appliances.

There is no easy conversion table from the old rating to the new rating, as the new energy label is calculated on the basis of a new testing method. This is why home appliances will be graded differently with the new energy label. The efficiency of the appliance yet stays the same. It is only the rating, i.e. the letter on the energy label, that changes, not the product efficiency.
